It depends on the binding style. For saddle stitch, keep important text or images at least ¼ inch from the fold. For perfect bound books, leave around ½ inch near the spine since some of the page is lost in the binding. For spiral bound & wire-o booklets, you’ll need extra space for hole drilling on the binding side, set your inside margin to ⅞ inches.
A good rule of thumb: the thicker the book, the more space you’ll want to leave near the binding.
